Jobs in Ft Lauderdale Showcased at Upcoming Expo

Broward County Community Action Agency, Broward College and WorkForce One are planning to host a free Career and Resources Job Fair Expo from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. September 2nd at the Broward College North Campus Omni Auditorium in Coconut Creek.

"Our first Career and Resources Job Fair was a complete success," Melvin Parrish, with Broward County Community Action Agency, said in reference to a job fair hosted in February. "More than 1,000 attended and 16 people were successfully placed in jobs that day."

Job seekers who attend the expo will be able to meet with employers from across South Florida representing companies in such industries as education, healthcare, aerospace and aviation, government, leisure and hospitality, business, technological services, and telecommunications.

Attendees will have access to many social services agencies, including: Broward County Family Success Administration Division, Broward County Health Department, and Children Services Council of Broward County.

Attendees also will be able to participate in various workshops designed to provide job seekers with the tools and information they need to find a career. Workshop topics will include resume critiquing, interviewing techniques, and tips on networking.

As part of the Community Action Agency's outreach efforts, job seekers can further learn about financial assistance programs available to them through the Community Service Block Grant and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"The Career and Resources Job Fair Expo has proven to be a successful collaborative community effort to bring opportunities and useful information to those seeking employment and social services," Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl said. "This event also introduces people to the variety of County services available to assist individuals and families in need. It's important that we continue to work together to provide solutions to the economic challenges that we face today."

The Dallas-Plano-Irving area had a total non-farm employment of 2,024,400 workers during July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,037,400 workers during June but a 1.3 percent increase from last year.

Only three industries saw a monthly increase in employment during July. The professional and business services industry experienced the biggest increase by far, adding 5,700 jobs over the month.

The mining, logging and construction industry added 600 jobs and the trade, transportation and utilities industry added 300 jobs during July. Employment in the financial activities industry remained even over the month with 174,800 jobs.

Four industries experienced a yearly increase in employment during July. The education and health services industry saw the most growth, increasing by 6.2 percent over the year, for a total of 253,800 jobs.

That was closely followed by the professional and business services industry, which grew by 5.9 percent over the year to 340,300 jobs. The government industry grew by 4.6 percent over the year to 264,800 jobs, while the manufacturing industry increased by 2.7 percent to 176,500 workers.

The information industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year, losing 7.9 percent of its workforce between July 2009 and July 2010, for a current total of 61,700 jobs.
