Fort Lauderdale teaching jobs were among only three industries that increased at the end of last year.
During December, Florida maintained a relatively high unemployment rate of 12 percent for the second consecutive month, well above the national average of 9.4 percent. The
Ft. Lauderdale area had an unemployment rate of 10.8 percent during November, the latest month for which data is available.
As a whole, the area fared much better on a monthly basis than on a yearly basis during December, employing 703,100 workers. That's up from 699,800 workers during November, but a .7 percent decrease from the previous year, according to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The trade, transportation, and utilities industry experienced the largest growth during December, adding 1,500 workers. That was followed by the leisure and hospitality industry, which added 1,200 jobs that month.
In addition, the government industry added 700 jobs; the professional and business services industry grew by 500 jobs; and the manufacturing industry added 200 job. Employment in the other services industry remained unchanged over the month with 32,300 jobs.
Only four industries lost workers over the month, including: construction by 400 jobs; education and health services by 200 jobs; and information and financial activities by 100 jobs each.
Unfortunately, only three industry experienced employment gains between December 2009 and December 2010. The other services industry grew the most, increasing by 3.9 percent, followed by the education and health services industry's growth of 1.7 percent and the leisure and hospitality industry's rise of .3 percent.
Industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:
- Construction by 10.5 percent
- Information by 4.9 percent
- Financial activities by 3.8 percent
- Government by 1.5 percent
- Manufacturing by .4 percent
- Professional and business services by .2 percent
- Trade, transportation, and utilities by .1 percent
