Nursing aides, orderlies and attendants are responsible for providing basic patient care under the direction of a nursing staff. They may be responsible for feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming or moving patients, as well as performing such duties as changing linens.

Most employers require candidates to at least have vocational school training, which can last anywhere from a few weeks to more than a year, depending on the program. Anyone wishing to work as a nursing aide in a nursing facility must become a certified nurse assistant.

In order to become a nursing aide in Texas, students must undergo a minimum of 75 training hours, including 51 hours of classroom and skills training and 24 hours of clinical training under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Across the nation, employment should increase from 1,447,233 by 2006 to 1,710,876 by 2016, accounting for 263,600 additional jobs and a growth rate of 18.20 percent.

In addition to the good employment outlook, nursing aides, orderlies and attendants also are paid relatively well. During 2008, employees in South Texas earned an average of $8.94 per hour, while those throughout Texas earned an average of $10.07 per hour and those across the nation earned $11.84 per hour.
