Denver Medical Jobs for Medical Transcriptionists

If you're looking for Denver medical jobs but don't necessarily want to be a nurse or doctor, or interact with patients, you should consider becoming a medical transcriptionist.

Medical transcriptionists typically use a transcribing machine with a headset and foot pedal to listen to recordings by physicians and other healthcare professionals in order to dictate a variety of medical reports, such as emergency room visits, diagnostic imaging studies, operations, chart reviews and final summaries.

They also may transcribe dictated reports and translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms, as well complete any necessary edits and return reports in either printed or electronic form to the dictator for review and signature or correction.

During 2008, medical transcriptionists in the Denver area earned a median salary of $18.64 per hour or $38,777 per year, while entry-level employees earned an average wage of $13.09 per hour or $27,237 per year, and experienced-level employees earned an average wage of $21.54 per hour or $44,808 per year.

Most employers prefer to hire medical transcriptionists that have post-secondary training in the field. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity awards two certifications for this occupation, including Registered Medical Transcriptionist and Certified Medical Transcriptionist.

The Colorado Department of Labor & Employment considers medical transcriptionists to be an in demand occupation. Employment is expected to increase from 589 workers during 2008 to 720 workers by 2018, accounting for 131 additional jobs and an annual increase of 2 percent.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment throughout the nation is expected to increase by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is about as fast as the average growth rate expected for all occupations.
