Fort Lauderdale teaching jobs were among only three industries that increased at the end of last year.

During December, Florida maintained a relatively high unemployment rate of 12 percent for the second consecutive month, well above the national average of 9.4 percent. The Ft. Lauderdale area had an unemployment rate of 10.8 percent during November, the latest month for which data is available.

As a whole, the area fared much better on a monthly basis than on a yearly basis during December, employing 703,100 workers. That's up from 699,800 workers during November, but a .7 percent decrease from the previous year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The trade, transportation, and utilities industry experienced the largest growth during December, adding 1,500 workers. That was followed by the leisure and hospitality industry, which added 1,200 jobs that month.

In addition, the government industry added 700 jobs; the professional and business services industry grew by 500 jobs; and the manufacturing industry added 200 job. Employment in the other services industry remained unchanged over the month with 32,300 jobs.

Only four industries lost workers over the month, including: construction by 400 jobs; education and health services by 200 jobs; and information and financial activities by 100 jobs each.

Unfortunately, only three industry experienced employment gains between December 2009 and December 2010. The other services industry grew the most, increasing by 3.9 percent, followed by the education and health services industry's growth of 1.7 percent and the leisure and hospitality industry's rise of .3 percent.

Industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in employment include:

• Construction by 10.5 percent
• Information by 4.9 percent
• Financial activities by 3.8 percent
• Government by 1.5 percent
• Manufacturing by .4 percent
• Professional and business services by .2 percent
• Trade, transportation, and utilities by .1 percent

A new radiology center will create thousands of oncology jobs (Click here) in Ohio.

Ohio State University recently received a $100 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. The funding will allow the university to build a radiation oncology center as part of a $1 billion expansion of the OSU Medical Center.

Construction of the new oncology center will create up to 5,000 temporary construction jobs; 6,000 permanent university jobs; and 4,000 jobs at businesses near the campus by 2015. Anyone applying for these positions may have to undergo an Ohio records check.

"(This award will) provide needed inpatient and outpatient clinical care, while at the same time making substantial improvements in their research capabilities," HRSA Administrator Mary K. Wakefield told The Columbus Dispatch.

In recent years, the OSU Medical Center has seen an increased demand for radiation services used to treat cancer, but did not previously have the funding to expand those services. That being said, the new radiation oncology center is expected to improve the lives of numerous patients.

Funding for the grant was included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed by Congress last year. OSU beat out more than six other schools for the funding and was the only university chosen to receive the grant money.

In order to be eligible for the grant, OSU had to prove that the Medical Center is necessary in order to provide more access to healthcare throughout Ohio. In addition, the funding could not make up more than 40 percent of the total project cost.

A popular discount retailer is creating thousands of chain jobs (Click here) throughout the nation.

Dollar General Corporation recently announced its plans to open 625 new stores and hire more than 6,000 employees this year. Each new store will employ six to 10 full- and part-time employees. Workers will receive competitive wages and flexible schedules and may have to undergo a background check.

The majority of the new stores will be located in the 35 states where Dollar General already has a presence. However, three new states - including Connecticut, Nevada, and New Hampshire - will see these stores for the first time.

"Bringing our store model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us," Rick Dreiling, chairman and CEO of Dollar General, said. "We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General."

Dollar General continues to expand its presence in suburban, rural, and metropolitan markets. Including the thousands of jobs to be added this year, the company has seen two years of job growth, adding more than 15,000 jobs between 2009 and 2011.

Dollar General, a discount retail chain headquartered in Tennessee, currently operates more than 9,200 locations. In addition to opening hundreds of new stores this year, the company also plans to remodel or relocate 550 of its existing stores.

San Antonio healthcare jobs (Click here) are among the many occupations expected to add workers this year.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas is predicting that the San Antonio area will add 27,300 jobs this year, which would result in a 3.2 percent increase in employment, according to the San Antonio Express-News. That's much higher than the 17,600 jobs, or 2.1 percent increase, the city saw during 2010.

San Antonio will likely add jobs at a faster pace than Texas as a whole. Employment throughout the state is expected to increase by 2.7 percent, which is higher than the 2 percent growth it experienced last year, but lower than the expected increase in San Antonio.

Several sectors and industries will be responsible for the extra jobs in San Antonio this year, including everything from the military and drilling activity to call centers and insurance companies. Industries that were prosperous during 2010 - such as government, finance, and manufacturing - also will add jobs this year.

Healthcare, which increased by 4.5 percent last year, will be another big jobs creator during 2011. There will be a strong need for qualified individuals to fill family therapist jobs (http://jobs.kidsindistress.org/working-kid), nursing positions, and even non-clinical occupations.

The improving economy can already be felt in San Antonio. The city's unemployment rate came in at 7.6 during November, and even though that's an increase from 7.3 percent during October, it's much lower than the national average at the time of 9.8 percent.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the San Antonio-New Braunfels area employed 840,000 workers during November, which is up from 838,500 workers during October and a .8 percent increase from last year.

The Citizen Oversight Board is currently looking for individuals who would like to serve as board members. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to help out the local community and earn a little bit of money while doing so.

The functions of the COB include:

• Assessing the effectiveness of the Independent Monitor's office.
• Making policy-level recommendations regarding discipline, use of force, and other policies.
• Addressing rules, hiring, training, community relations, and the complaint process.
• Addressing any issues of concern to the community, members of the board, the monitor, the manager of safety, the chief of police, the under sheriff, or the fire chief.

In order to become a board member you must be a Denver resident; not be an employee of the city of county of Denver; and not be employed by or have family members employed by the Denver police, sheriff, or fire department.

Interested applicants also should have the background knowledge and experience necessary to develop objective views and opinions relating to issues that significantly impact local law enforcement and the local community.

Those chosen to serve on the board will be asked to serve a four-year term beginning as soon as possible. Board members meet on the first and third Friday morning of each month and conduct televised public meetings each quarter. Board members are paid a monthly stipend of $100.
